Ecuador was very close to a government collapse Thursday, as national police took to the streets of Quito, the capital, and attacked the president over what police say was the cancellation of bonuses and promotions. The government declared a one-week state of emergency Thursday afternoon and put the military in charge of security. The military said it will support the president and the nation's democratic institutions. A broadcast by Ecuador TV showed mobs on the streets and clouds of black smoke coming from burning tires and garbage. Do you think that the police involved will get their bonuses and promotions back from this act?

Astronomers say they have for the first time found a planet other than our own that is sometimes called the goldilocks zone for life. Its not too hot or cold. Its not to far from its star so it could contain liquid water. The planet itself is neither too big nor too small for the right surface, gravity and atmosphere. The new planet sits smack in the middle of what astronomers refer to as the habitable zone, unlike any of the nearly 500 other planets astronomers have found. It is in a galaxy close by. Finding a planet that could support life is a major step toward answering a very important question. Are we alone in this universe?

A while back 33 miners were trapped a half a mile underground. They get laundry service, TV, three hot meals a day and even ice cream for dessert. The miners now get some of the comforts of home, at least those that can be lowered through little holes. The miners are sleeping on cots that were sent down in pieces and reassembled, and each can look forward every weekend to eight minutes of video chat time each with his family using cameras and a phone that was disassembled to fit through the hole. It is planned to try and get the miners out soon. Do you think that if the rocks the miners are buried under are lifted up that they may become loose and fall on the miners?

A North Dakota lake, Devils Lake, has already swallowed two towns and has been growing very slowly for a long time. Investigators fear that if it overflows 6 more feet, it will swallow some downstream communitys. There is also another fear. Scientists say that the lake overflows from heavy rain and snow. They predict that they will have heavy rain and snow for another decade which will overflow the lake even more and wipe out more communitys. Do you think that it will eventually wipe out everything around it?

Current Event.
Hurricane Earl, still a dangerous Category 3 storm, closed in on the North Carolina coast Thursday, prompting warnings and evacuation orders as the region braced for heavy rains and a dangerous storm surge.
Meteorologists predict the eye of the hurricane will stay close to the East Coast but remain at sea over the next few days, with the Middle Atlantic's outermost islands and New England's Cape Cod likely to take the worst hit. How bad do you think Cape Cod will get the strom?
